Karlos and Ash rip it up at Red Bull Mini Drome in Manchester

Karlos, Ash and their mate Giles ventured over the pennines on Saturday to compete in the Red Bull Mini Drome.

The Mini Drome is the world’s smallest velodrome, engineered in Germany by Velotrack, the team who built the velodrome’s for the Atlanta Olympics and the Delhi Commonwealth Games, it maintains race worthy dimensions in the smallest possible size to enable a single pursuit.

Karlos crashed and burned in style on his qualifier

Ash got the 13th fastest time in qualifying and got knocked out just before the quarter finals.

Good skills

Stolen!

Pesky thieves have stolen our handsome vintage children’s tricycle for a second time. The Tricycle which graces our homepage and the ledge above our side door was stolen a couple of weeks ago, but retrieved from some kids in the park who had stripped themudguards and brake in a quest for increased straight line speed.

On returning from a weekend in sunny Lisbon it appears as though the thieves have struck again and we are without our tricycle once more. Whether it is the same culprits or another group of speed freaks we don’t know. We are experiencing the whole range of emotions from loss through to anger and would dearly like to have the tricycle returned.

If we could ask you all to be vigilant and keep your eyes peeled and ear to the ground and let us know if you see or hear anything.

Have you seen this tricycle?

ReCycle Bikes in Lisbon

Over the weekend Workshop Manager Paul (that’s me) was in Lisbon, Portugal working in partnership with the CTC and Lisbon based environmental organisation 5elemento.

The aim of the trip was to plan a week long Bicycle Recycling project at the end of November. During the project, 8 British and 8 Portuguese participants will take part in a variety of activities centred around the idea of bicycle recycling. This will culminate with all of the participants taking part in the Lisbon Critical Mass.

One of the participants to be put forward for the project is Karlos (one of our mechanics) who we’ve suggested leads a bike maintenance session.

It was good to meet and work with Tejesh from the CTC and we look forward to working with him to help organise the UK end of the project.

Thanks to all the Guys over at 5elemento, Joao, Pedro and Sylvia who looked after us while we were over there.

Outdoor Cinema and Shopping Bike World Championships

On Sunday night ReCycle Bikes hosted the Magic Lantern Film Club for a special ‘End of Summer Soiree’ outdoor film screening.  Our yard was transformed into secret outdoor cinema with refreshments provided by Abundance (freshly hand pressed local apple and pear juice), Caffe Carino (Good coffee, cool Piaggio Ape) and Popcorn from Jenny’s industrial sized machine.

As the sun was going down the yard was also host to the inaugural Shopping Bike Yard Racing World Championships and 4 heats, 2 semis and a final later we crowned our very own Ash as champion (with Karlos a close second, not bad to say he’s only just got the pot off his left foot after a recent scooter accident). A big thanks to all contenders who made the event great to watch.

SBYRWC Final 2011 Ash Vs Karlos

The weather remained fine and the whole evening was a success. A huge thank you to everyone involved in the organisation and to everyone who attended making it such a cool event. We’re already talking about next year…

The Magic Lantern people have asked if we could direct you to a quick feedback form on their website to let them know what you thought of it all.
